How to maintain your DIY outdoor fountains.

Maintenance on outdoor DIY fountains should be performed regularly to help maintain their beauty and keep them functioning properly. Your outdoor fountain collects dirt, leaves, twigs, and other debris. In addition to looking bad, this dirt and debris can contribute to poor water quality and can shorten the life of other fountain components such as the pump and nozzles.

Here are a few maintenance tips to keep your outdoor fountain running smoothly:

1. Inspect the pump on a regular basis. The pump is probably the most critical component because it is what makes the water flow. Inspect the pump intake to make sure no debris has partially blocked the intake or has become lodged in the pump itself. If the pump begins making a loud noise it may be due to debris being lodged in the impeller or other excessive wear.

2. Inspect all pipe and hose connections. Over time pipe and hose connections can begin to leak. These leaks can cause damage to structure surrounding the fountain.

3. Clean the reservoir periodically. It is necessary to drain all of the water from the reservoir and clean the fountain periodically. This cleaning will remove any dirt and leaves that have settled to the bottom as well as any algae that may have accumulated. This is also a good time to clean any plugged fountain nozzles. Usually all you need is a garden hose and a stiff brush to clean the fountain. However, a pressure washer can make quick work of most residential water features. Be cautious when using a pressure washer because you can cause damage to some stone work and other finishes.

By periodically performing a few maintenance tips your DIY outdoor fountain will give you years of enjoyment.
