Essential Tips for Pond Fertilization

Pond fertilization is an excellent tool in pond management. It allows you to improve the water quality greatly. You can even increase fish production in your pond by as much as 300%, because of the increased phytoplankton that results from pond fertilization. Organisms feed on phytoplankton and they flourish in darker waters which result from the fertilization. There is also less algae and fewer submersed aquatic weeds following fertilization. Therefore you should take the time to learn about the details of pond fertilization.

Know Which Types of Ponds To Fertilize

It is incredibly important to only fertilize ponds that are good candidates for pond fertilization because it is not beneficial for every pond. If the water is not hard enough or the soil pH is low, the pond should not be fertilized. You can adjust the pH of the water by applying lime but must wait 4-6 weeks following application before you can attempt pond fertilization.

If a pond has aquatic weed growth, avoid fertilization. Such growth must be controlled prior to pond fertilization. Black water ponds or muddy ponds are also not good candidates for pond fertilization. If the pond gets runoff from animal manure or organic fertilizer, it does not need pond fertilization.

Choosing The Right Fertilizer

When you are selecting fertilizer for your pond, be sure to get one that is highly water soluble. If it sinks to the bottom of the pond, you will find that it binds to the soil there and will not fertilize the water. Highly soluble pond fertilizers come in powder, granular and liquid forms. Be sure that the fertilizer has phosphorus, very little nitrogen and no potassium.

Getting Started With Pond Fertilization

You should do your initial pond fertilization when the water temperature is around 60°F. This is typically around March or April, depending on where you live. You may only need 1 treatment per year, however 3 times a year is the average. Give the pond 2 weeks to adjust following the initial application before deciding if you need further applications. To help you decide when your pond no longer needs additional fertilization, the guideline is to stop when you can no longer see an object that is 18” below the water surface.

If you are using liquid fertilizer you will need to mix it with 10 parts water to 1 part fertilizer before distributing it before across the pond. Powder or granular fertilizers should be dissolved in water and the same ratio used prior to application.

Make sure you do not fertilize your pond if the temperature of the water is lower than 60°F. Typically this is in September or October. Pond fertilization when water is too cold is ineffective and may cause algae issues that become apparent when the water warms up again.

Be sure to purchase a quality pond fertilization product and seek professional help if you have questions about the process. Pond fertilization is an important aspect of caring for and maintaining a healthy pond.

The Allure of Water Gardens and Waterfalls

Water gardens and waterfalls are a beautiful addition to any landscape. They add a touch of peacefulness to your surroundings and help to create an area of true relaxation that blends seamlessly with nature. Creating and maintaining a water area is an enjoyable hobby and a joy to behold. However, the initial setting up of water gardens and waterfalls is more involved than it looks.

You can achieve the water garden or waterfall oasis that you are striving for if you successfully bring together a healthy flow of water, aquatic plants, fish and good bacteria. In addition you will need to make sure there are adequate biological and mechanical filters, as well as quality plumbing and pumps. If all these things work together correctly you will find that the system is balanced and your oasis is perfect. Little maintenance is required once you have achieved balance.

The Right Equipment For Water Gardens and Waterfalls

When considering adding water gardens or waterfalls to your grounds, be sure you purchase only quality products. You will need reliable pumps, filters, piping, jets, nozzles, liners and more to ensure continued flow of water in your creation. By opting for products that are not up to the task, you will experience frequent breakdowns, an unbalanced ecosystem, and need to replace the parts and equipment more often than you should. By investing in more reliable equipment, your water gardens and waterfalls will flow continually and you will have minimal maintenance to do.

Upkeep of Water Gardens and Waterfalls

Once you create your little oasis and it is in perfect balance, there will still be some required maintenance to do. Depending on the climate where you live you may have more maintenance or less. For those in a warm climate, water gardens and waterfalls may be enjoyed year-round. The upkeep of the water feature is limited to monitoring water levels, controlling algae, and cleaning debris from filters. Mostly you will do little more than add good bacteria and clean the skimmer net every week or so.

If you live in a colder climate you will need to do more to maintain your water garden or waterfall. You will first have to decide if you plan to leave it running during the winter months or if you will stop the pump and have it freeze. If there are fish you will need to remove them or have a heater to keep them alive. If you allow your water area to freeze, you will have to rebalance the system again when you start it back up. In the spring you will need to clean all the filters in your system and then drain all the water and refill it with fresh water.

Consult a professional before embarking on your water garden or waterfall project
. You will get the information you need to make sure that you have an ecologically balanced system with the correct equipment and components to make sure your flowing water system is healthy and attractive, so you get to enjoy the tranquility of flowing water in your surroundings.

The Basics of Irrigation Troubleshooting

Irrigation systems are tricky to maintain and anyone with one is sure to need irrigation troubleshooting help from time to time. There are so many things that can go wrong, such as your system inadequately covering the area it is supposed to, leaving brown patches; uneven water flow; systems that refuse to shut off; or portions that refuse to work. Rest assured that any mechanical system dealing with water is bound to have some issues. However knowing a little about irrigation troubleshooting will help you avoid and deal with such issues.

Regular maintenance and upgrading your irrigation system when necessary are key components when it comes to irrigation troubleshooting. In fact, you will face significantly fewer problems that require troubleshooting if you do such things.

Regular Maintenance Reduces The Need For Irrigation Troubleshooting

Preventative maintenance is essential to irrigation troubleshooting.

•   Do regular check-ups on various parts of your system. Schedule a monthly inspection of all parts, including scanning for leaks, sprinkler heads that are clogged or broken and other problems with the system.
•   Regular cleaning of nozzle screens and micro-irrigation filters should be done on a regular basis to prevent clogging.
•   Check water pressure regularly as it can cause efficiency issues if it fluctuates.
•   Make sure your sprinkler heads are adjusted correctly so that they adequately water the areas that are needed.
•   Bring in an irrigation specialist to ensure that your system is ready for winter. They have equipment to properly drain and “blow out” your system, so lingering water doesn’t freeze and damage different aspects of your irrigation system. Winterizing is essential if you live in a cold climate.

Upgrades Minimize the Need For Irrigation Troubleshooting

Consider changes to your system. If you find that your irrigation system is over-watering, especially when there has been rain, you may want to get the technology to detect such issues. Rain shutoff switches are inexpensive and are easy to attach to most irrigation systems. This will save you from an inflated water bill and excess watering problems. Another water-saving investment you may want to make is in smart technology which includes sensors which check weather and soil moisture conditions. Automatic changes to the irrigation schedule of your system are made depending on the readings of such sensors.

There is some new technology worth considering also. If you opt for water-efficient products when you upgrade your system, your water utility may give you rebates. Check it out before making your purchase. Look into low volume, micro-irrigation options for landscaping irrigation. Significantly less water is used with micro spray jets, drip irrigation, bubbler irrigation and micro-sprinklers, helping you save water and reducing runoff.

It is extremely valuable to know when to call an irrigation specialist.
Such individuals have the specialized knowledge and expertise to effectively deal with serious irrigation problems. If a review of your system reveals nothing that you can deal with, call in a specialist to take care of the job. You should also have your system audited by such a specialist in order to ensure that it is running optimally and your areas are getting the necessary irrigation.
